LOVEMYLEATHERJACKET

Group show at Hunters and Collectors 1987 2020. As conservative 1980's New Zealand frequented the middle-class bastions of traditional department stores such as Smith and Caughey's, Kirkcaldie and Stains, and Ballentynes, those living a rougher edgier, alternative experience went to Hunters & Collectors.

First Opened in 1985 in Symonds St then K'rd, Auckland, branches then sprang up in Cuba St, Wellington 1987 and Manchester St, Christchurch, 1989. Since then Hunters & Collectors has been THE place for vintage and second hand clothing and jewellery, object d'art and leatherwear, producing their own H&C branded leather jackets for many years throughout the 90's. Customised leather jackets graced the burly backs of bouncers of iconic club, The Box and notoriously cool, hotel bar DeBretts.

H&C, as it has affectionately become known, was synonymous with the nightlife/club scene and local history of the 90's, early 2000's and beyond.

Fast track to 35 years later, Christina O has added an art gallery to the Cuba Street store focusing on new and established artists who work across all media, exploring art, craft and design to convey alternative points of view in the world.

LOVEMYLEATHERJACKET is a multidisciplinary show celebrating the history of H&C, the iconic leather jacket and it's association with cool, rebellion, music and popular culture.

The artists and designers participating work across various 3d and 2d platforms. Processes of up cycling and reconfiguring have been encouraged to reflect our current environmental responsibility. Wearable pieces, bags and accessories mix with glitter art, photography and weaving. The artists/designers participating are Xoe Hall, Gina Kiel, JPalm, Native Sista, Rachel Long, Stanley Manthying, Stylists Own, Ted Black, Jimmy Lousich, Paula Collier and Mister Buck.
